The mosque is one of the most prominent structures in which Islamic architecture has been observed throughout history, embodying specific dos and don’ts that must be taken into account. Just as the Holy Lawgiver has introduced rulings for the actions of individuals in all aspects of life, specific architectural guidelines and rulings have also been established concerning many places frequented by Muslims, including the mosque, which holds a particular sanctity. This article aims to identify the indicators and principles of the dos and don’ts of mosque architecture in Islamic culture, drawing from narratives and the practices of the Infallibles (peace be upon them). The findings of the research indicate that, according to Islamic sources, narrations, and the practices of the Infallibles (peace be upon them), there are external architectural indicators for mosques such as the mosque’s centrality within the city, courtyards, domes, and the mosque’s boundaries. Moreover, there are rulings regarding these aspects in Islamic texts. Additionally, there are internal architectural indicators for mosques, including inscriptions, geometric shapes, and the proportion of the mosque’s capacity to the anticipated needs of future generations, which are also reflected in Islamic sources. The research findings also extend to the don’ts, revealing that certain practices should be avoided when constructing mosques, such as: using gold and silver for ornamentation, architectural similarities with churches and the religious sites of other faiths, including images in mosques, and constructing walls in a jagged manner. Furthermore, the mosque should not have characteristics that infringe upon its surroundings; for example, minarets should not overlook neighboring homes. Cemeteries should not be integrated within mosque premises, and restrooms should not be located within the mosque’s sacred area due to concerns related to impurity and cleanliness. The mosque’s entrance should not face the Qibla, and it should not be built in the path of passage.
